Keeper Kitzinger is spot-on for Wargrave in penalty showdown
GOALKEEPER Shaun Kitzinger saved a penalty to put Wargrave into the next round of the Reading
GOALKEEPER Shaun Kitzinger saved a penalty to put Wargrave into the next round of the Reading Challenge Junior Cup on Saturday.
The home side defeated Marlow Reserves 4-3 in the shoot-out after a drab first round tie ended 1-1 after extra time.
Wargrave started well and took the lead after Tom Bray finished well from the edge of the area but were pegged back just before half-time.
But the game showed little quality from either side and it was no surprise that the second half was a stalemate with few real chances being created. Then, with three minutes remaining of extra time, Kitzinger made a point blank save from a Marlow attacker, which drew applause from the visiting side.
Wargrave scored all four of their spot-kicks, taken by Bray, captain George Stagg, Michael Few and Dan Patterson. Marlow had hit the post with their second penalty and Kitzinger saved their fourth.
The match was Stagg’s first for Wargrave in four months, following knee surgery, while Matt Belcher made his debut for the hosts.
Elsehwhere, Woodcote/Stoke Row’s interest in the Junior Cup was ended when their reserve side was thrashed 7-0 by Eldon Celtic.
