Five-star Henley clinch league title in style

AFC HENLEY STARS U17s made sure of the East Berks League Division 2 title with a 5-3

AFC HENLEY STARS U17s made sure of the East Berks League Division 2 title with a 5-3 victory over a strong BINFIELD U17s team on Wednesday night of last week at Harpsden.

After a fiercely contested start to the game the hosts took control and began to press hard on the Binfield goal and took the lead  when a ball from Lewis Cowper beat the visitors’ defence and Joey Newman slotted home. Minutes later Newman added his second with a shot into the top corner.

Joel Gosby went on a mazy run past three Binfield players before scoring with the deftest of finishes in the bottom corner to put the hosts 3-0 up at half-time. Binfield pressed the Henley goal in the second half with wave after wave of attack that eventually resulted in a goal.

Henley soaked up the pressure with some good defending and when they were awarded a free kick just inside the Binfield half Sam Booth crossed the ball for Sam Kelly to score at his second attempt.

Henley put the game out of reach when Joseph Clarke robbed a Binfield defender and coolly slotted the ball past the keeper. The visitors pulled two goals back late on to narrow the score line.

AFC HENLEY HURRICANES U13s went down to a 3-0 defeat at home to LAUREL PARK U13s in Division 2 of the East Berks League on Saturday.

The game started evenly as both teams battled to get the early goal which the visitors eventually got with a long ball, neatly dispatched by their quick striker.

Henley had their chances, a long shot by Lucas Pestana was kept out by by the Laurel Park keeper. Henley had further chances but it was not to be their day as Laurel Park were able to break, extending their lead.

Unable to capitalise on chances, Henley’s hope of salvaging the game came to an end as Laurel Park netted from the penalty spot late on.
