Birdies help Deignan hit top spot at Caversham

THERE was a tight finish in Division 1 of the weekend Stableford at Caversham Heath on Saturday with two shots covering the top six players.

Michael Deignan grabbed top spot with 37 points, including four birdies and six pars, although he ended with a bogey. Runner-up was James McGiveron on countback from David Wise both with 36 points. The ighlight of McGiveron’s round was an eagle three on the par five fourth hole.

Mathew Brakspear lost his chance of a top three finish after bogeying the last hole to end with 35 points. Brakspear scored 12 pars and two birdies, but followed with two consecutive nil returns on the 14th and 15th hole and then had a bogey to finish.

Division 2 winner was Andy Horn on countback from Duncan Peart both with 37 points. Horn bogeyed his last hole while Peart had four doubles on his back nine, including on the last. Nicholas Redrup took third place on countback from Dan Rawlings, Nigel Barden and Trevor Hayden, all with 35 points.

Andy Lambourne received a one shot cut in handicap after winning Division 3 with 39 points. Runner-up was Alan Davies with 35 points and third was Luke Penn with 34 points.

Nick Ford took the honours in Division 1 of the midweek Stableford on Wednesday of last week with 40 points. Runner-up was Ben Storey with 39 points and third was Neil McAllister on countback from David Howland, both with 37 points.

John Holdsworth shot 44 points (halves of 23 and 21 points) to secure top spot in Division 2. Second was Geoff Parlour with 42 points, and third was Daniel Dover with 41 points. Both Holdsworth and Parlour received a two shot cut in handicap while Dover received a one shot cut.
