‘Elitist’ golf opened up to young

Coaches Warren Harris and Glenn Johnson run “kids’ camps” at the club with the aim of getting youngsters into the sport.

Activities include golf-related games such as crazy-golf style putting, obstacle courses and pace control.

Mr Harris said: “I want to get as many youngsters as possible playing the game so they are not sitting inside playing on their games consoles but outside getting exercise and enjoying a challenging but fun sport. The emphasis of the camps is most definitely on fun. I love teaching the children and seeing them improve but the main thing is that they enjoy it.

“Golf is much more accessible these days. Previously it has been seen as an elitist and expensive sport but now the majority of golf clubs welcome visitors and new golfers for lessons and to play.”

Later this year, Hennerton will once again offer taster sessions through the Get into Golf scheme.
