THERE was a close finish in Division 1 of the March weekend medal at Caversham Heath with countback needed to decide the top three placings.
David Stankard won out ahead of John Downey and Anne Smith, all with net 78.
Division 2 winner was Andrew Thompson with net 74. Runner-up was Luis Mesquita with net 78 and third was Greg McDonald with net 80.
Kevin Iremonger took the honours in Division 3 with net 78. Second was Jason Springer on countback from Issy Wiggins-Turner and Caroline Dover, all with net 79.
The gross winner was Richard Carven with 81.
The Champions Cup, an invitation only competition, was won by Wendy Bushell with net 68. Runner-up was David Little with net 72 and third was Caroline Dover with net 73.
Gareth Goodall is the new scratch knockout cup holder. He gained a narrow win over Dave Williams in the final.
The match swung in Dave Williams’ favour as early as the first hole and it remained a tight contest for the remainder of the round.
Goodall went one up on the 13th for the first time and Williams was unlucky not to level the match on the 15th hole, and on hole 17 another birdie putt attempt just failed to drop. Williams was unable to conjure the necessary birdie on the final hole to force extra holes leaving the number four and number 11 seeds to shake hands.
This was the first club scratch knockout drawn as a seeded competition based on exact handicaps with Williams and Goodall defeating the number two and number one seeds in their respective semi-finals.
Edward Houghton and Thom Parker beat Archie Smith and Will Tate in the final to win the junior foursomes knockout competition.
Caversham Heath Ladies had a tense home tie against West Berks in the Duncan Trophy. With the score locked at 2-2 it all came down to the last match and, fortunately, Issy Wiggins-Turner delivered the goods to ensure a safe passage through to round two.
