Club championship joy for Williams and Smith

DAVE WILLIAMS finally got his hands on the Caversham Heath Men’s Club Championship trophy last weekend.

DAVE WILLIAMS finally got his hands on the Caversham Heath Men’s Club Championship trophy last weekend.

The four handicapper, who finished seventh last year and fourth in 2013, scored two rounds of 79 to grab the honours by one shot.

Saturday proved a tough day for scoring with Williams leading the 66 competitors home with gross 79, including two birdies on the back nine. Matt Robertson and Chris Gaines were hot on his tracks with gross 80s.

Richard Craven, who was runner-up last year, made a move with a gross 78 on Sunday, but this wasn’t enough to knock Williams from the top after he produced another gross 79.

It could have been so much better for Craven as he had got himself into pole position, leading the field with just two holes remaining. However, he bogeyed both the 17th and 18th holes while Williams made sure of top spot with a birdie on the 17th hole.

Craven secured second place on countback from Chris Gaines who recorded rounds of 80 and 79 to score 159. Gaines too had chances, but had to be content with par on each of the final four holes. The net championship was won by Gaines with a combined total of (75 and 74) 149. With the club operating a rule that no player can win more than one prize, runner-up spot went to Dave Stankard with (76 and 77) 153.

Meanwhile Anne Smith won the ladies’ club championship for the fifth consecutive year.

Smith shot a gross 91 in the first round to take a five-shot lead over Julie Daniels going into the second day.

In the rain on day two Smith produced the best round of the competition with a 90 for a combined gross tally of 181 to win by 14 shots from runner-up Rachel Downey with 195. Third was Daniels with 106.

The ladies’ net winner was club treasurer Caroline Dover with 156 net. Runner-up in her first Caversham Heath Club Championships was Fiona Ives with 157 while Debbie Harris was third with 159.

Matt Robertson claimed top spot in the midweek medal with net 69. Runner-up was Gerry Rogers with net 72 and third was Archie Smith with net 74.

Division 2 winner was Lynne Rumbold on countback from Keith Taylor, both with net 74. Third was Stuart Walker with net 78.
