Pollard holds nerve to secure ladies’ crown

KAREN POLLARD won the ladies’ club championship at Henley Golf Club for the first time last

KAREN POLLARD won the ladies’ club championship at Henley Golf Club for the first time last weekend following an enthralling competition which resulted in a play-off.

After the first round Pollard and Janet Lawson were leaders with 78s. Maggi Buffin was third with 81.

There was nothing to split the leading two in the afternoon when they both recorded 83s to tie on a total of 161. Sally Woolven had the best score in the afternoon at 78 whilst holder Sarah Arnold recorded 82 and previous champion Jane Atkin 81 to take third place on a total of 163.

With 36 holes not producing a winner the competition went into a three hole play-off. In this Pollard went birdie, par, par whilst Lawson went birdie, bogey, birdie to take the play-off into sudden death.

On to the fourth extra hole, their 40th hole of the day, both players hit good tee shots and their second shots finished just short of the green. Pollard chipped to within a foot for a four while Lawson missed her six-feet putt for the birdie and a half to decide the match in dramatic fashion.
