SCRATCH handicap golfer Martyn Metcalfe took the honours at Henley’s club championship last weekend.

Metcalfe had a four shot lead from Jason Livy after the first round with a 69 played on Saturday with Chris Maxted and Alan Gaffney close behind.

This margin was increased after the morning round on Sunday where he was three under at the half way stage and was leading the rest of the field by 10 shots.

A double bogey start to the back nine didn’t deter him and he coasted in with a nine shot winning margin of 141 (one over par).

Peter Muhley had the best final round score of 71 to be joint runner-up with Livy and Maxted on 150. Past champions Digby Rancombe and Dave Griffin were two shots further back.

The ladies’ championship, which had to be rearranged from the previous Tuesday because of inclement weather, also reached its climax on Sunday which resulted in a first time winner for the fourth time in five years.

Clare Dodds, a single figure handicapper, had a commanding lead of five shots from reigning champion Karen Pollard and Sarah Hillas after the first round but a spirited fight back from 2012 champion Jane Atkin of 82 reduced the winning margin to three shots. Pollard was third on a two round score of 169.

Best gross score of the day went to Muriel Quinsac with an 81 which resulted in her winning the net score trophy.
