THE restoration of Whitchurch and Goring Heath’s joint war memorial should take place in November.
Goring Heath Parish Council is now just £1,700 short of its target of £9,000 for the work, so it has ordered the new stonework from mason A F Jones, of Ipsden.
The monument at the top of Whitchurch high street was built in 1920 and originally bore a more elaborate Celtic cross but this snapped off in 1989. A replica is to be carved using old photographs and computer modelling.
About £3,450 of the money raised so far came from the War Memorial Trust and the rest from private donations.
Council chairman Peter Dragonetti said: “We’ve had a major donation from a local trust which wants to remain anonymous and many more gifts of between £50 and £200 or so. People have been very generous.”
