Amber and blues make progress in trophy

SEVEN goals by hosts Henley ensured a safe passage into the next round of the Investec Mixed Trophy at Jubilee Park on Sunday against Camberley and Farnborough.

The hosts started slowly, with a lack of ball-pace, slow movement off the ball, and several wayward passes allowing the opposition early possession.

Despite this, resolute defending from Georgie Metcalfe, Kat Green and Mel Joyce ensured the early pressure produced no clear chances and it wasn’t long before the home team began to exert a grip on the game.

The central midfield trio of Jem Barham, Ed Foster and Rhys Joyce started to dominate their opposite numbers and this gave Henley the time and space to press forward. Wide players Chris Green and Jonny Taylor were now in the game, causing the opposition problems with every turn.

The pressure was constant and the amber and blues were able to win a succession of penalty corners. The opening goal arrived from one of these, after the ball hit a foot on the goal-line. Rhys Joyce stepped up to despatch the resulting penalty flick. The same player doubled the lead moments later, converting from a tight angle. A third goal followed shortly afterwards when another penalty flick was awarded. This time Serena Hickman converted the flick.
