HENLEY LADIES 1sts came away from the south coast with a narrow win against South League Division 2 basement side
HENLEY LADIES 1sts came away from the south coast with a narrow win against South League Division 2 basement side Southampton on Saturday.
Henley tried to take the game to the hosts but found this difficult as they packed their defence in an attempt to thwart the visitors.
The visitors created the most chances of the game but were unable to convert and at times left themselves exposed at the back but good play by Kath Evans and Mel Lennard kept the score line goalless at half-time.
After a stern half-time team talk the amber and blues played much better in the second half.
The visitors were eventually rewarded halfway through the half when a well-worked short corner left Serena Hickman with a simple tap-in. The victory leaves Henley in fourth place in the table.
HENLEY Ladies 4ths picked up a useful Trysports BBO Division 2 point as they held promotion-chasing Abingdon Ladies 1sts to a goalless draw on Saturday.
With a rotation of players, Henley began pressing from the start putting Abingdon under pressure and not allowing them time on the ball.
Henley pressed as a team with each unit moving forward and for the first time this season, dropping to help with defensive duties. With the forwards covering a lot of ground and sweeping with the midfield supporting and the defence pushing up Henley had some good possession.
Abingdon had the ball illegally in the goal but with both umpires’ quick decision it was converted into a quick break back down the pitch for Henley to gain a short corner from.
Henley were unfortunate not to score when a quick free hit found Potts in the circle who managed to deflect the ball goal-bound but for a last grasp clearance of the line to be thwarted.
