Joseph’s brace not enough as Wallingford secure point
HENLEY 1sts were held to a 3-3 draw in their MBBO Division 1 clash with local rivals Wallingford at Jubilee
HENLEY 1sts were held to a 3-3 draw in their MBBO Division 1 clash with local rivals Wallingford at Jubilee Park on Saturday.
The match started well for the visitors who dominated possession and were awarded a penalty stroke on the 20 minute mark after James Baker was adjudged to have stopped the ball on the goal line with his foot. The penalty stroke was dispatched past Cox in the Henley goal.
This lead was doubled five minutes later after slack Henley marking allowed a Wallingford deflection in the D, resulting in the visitors’ second goal of the match.
Henley responded with a well-crafted short-corner routine involving Tony Gaze and Ed Foster, the former applying the finishing touch to reduce the lead to 2-1.
Henley drew level just before half-time with a flowing move down the right flank involving Ally Slay and Chris Green, resulting in a pinpoint cross from Jodie Measures who found Geoff Joseph free at the far post. In the second half Henley pushed forward looking to take the lead and were rewarded when some good fortune and determined running from Ross Hibberd resulted in Joseph’s second of the day. The striker placed the ball into the empty net after the Wallingford keeper was found out of position.
Despite their attempts Henley were unable to hold on to this lead and Wallingford drew level with 10 minutes left to play after Henley keeper Cox committed a last-ditch foul on the Wallingford centre-forward, resulting in a second penalty flick which was again tucked into the corner of the goal to make it 3-3.
Despite more pressure from the home side in the last minutes, a winning goal could not be forced and the points were shared.
Tomorrow (Saturday) Henley 1sts travel to Oxford Hawks 2nds.
l Henley Ladies 1sts lost out 4-1 against Spencers Wood 1sts on Saturday before drawing 2-2 with Banbury 1sts the following day.
