HENLEY 1sts defeated newly promoted Witney 1sts in their first home match of the MBBO season at Jubilee Park on Saturday.

The hosts started strongly, dominating the early midfield exchanges, with Foster, Mortimer, Taylor and Hibberd playing some clever passes through to Green, Joseph and new recruit Benji Hetherington.

On the 10 minute mark Henley broke the deadlock through Joseph who turned the ball home from close range after good play from Hibberd and Measures down the right wing.

Despite early domination, the visitors responded well, equalising after 15 minutes after a failed clearance fell to the Witney centre forward who tucked the ball into the net despite the attentions of the Henley backline.

Henley soon responded as Chris Green powered the ball past the Witney keeper following good pressing by Foster and Mortimer in midfield. Soon after they added a third, as Joseph again pounced on a loose ball in the opposition D to make it 3-1 to Henley after 25 minutes.

The visitors scored a fortunate second goal after a ricochet led to a tap-in to reduce the arrears just before half-time.

Henley came out of the blocks quickest in the second half and Joseph wrapped up his hat-trick on the 40 minute mark with a shot into the bottom corner of the goal.

Witney hit back with two breakaway goals in the space of five minutes to level the scores with 15 minutes of the match remaining, making the score 4-4 with 15 minutes to play, setting up a grand-stand finish.

Henley restored their lead when debutant John McLaughlin fired the ball into the roof of the net after a slick short-corner routine.

The hosts sealed all three points through Taylor, after Foster combined well with Hetherington through the centre of the pitch, who in turn played a pass to Taylor, diving full length to deflect the ball into the top corner of the Witney goal.

Henley are at home again tomorrow (Saturday) when they entertain PHC Chiswick at Jubilee Park at 1.30pm.
