But youngsters continue to show their potential

HENLEY U16s again showed the future of the club was in good hands in this friendly

HENLEY U16s again showed the future of the club was in good hands in this friendly victory over local rivals.

They started strong with the core of Fred Newbold and Tim Herbert clearing up anything that came through the middle and using the width of the pitch with Nico Cheesman making some great runs down the right wing.

Henley took the lead when Cheesman fired a ball into the D which was stopped and converted by centreback James Rechner. Newbold then made a great run through the centre of the pitch and finished with a reverse shot.

But Henley then tried to experiment in attack and were caught out. An attempt to run from defence was expertly picked by the Phoenix centre-half who bore down on goal and superbly rounded the Henley keeper and found the net.

Henley hit back from the restart. A long ball forward found Herbert whose bouncing shot was saved but fell into the path of Ewan Watkins who finished with a reverse hit in the air from close range. Just before half-time Newbold got his second.

After the break, Henley didn’t start well and a shot by Rechner was helped on its way past his younger brother David in the Henley goal for 4-2. Shaw then executed a great long ball for Watkins to collect and convert while Newbold completed his hat-trick with seconds just left.
