Seven fire engines called to house blaze

SEVEN fire engines were called to a house fire in Benson last night (Friday).

Crews from Wallingford, Watlington, Didcot, Slade Park in Oxford, Abingdon, and Goring were called at about 9.45pm, along with a hydraulic platform from Rewley Road in Oxford and a command unit from Maidenhead.

There were alerted by a passer-by who spotted the fire in the garage, where it initially began.

It then quickly spread to the roof of the home.

Crews quickly brought the fire under control from outside the property using large hose lines, before sending firefighters wearing breathing apparatus inside to fight the fire.

The hydraulic platform is still on the scene to investigate the presence of any hot spots that may remain within the roof space, and to make the property safe.

A specialist fire investigator is currently working to try and establish the cause of the fire. However, Oxfordshire Fire and Rescue Service believes the cause to be “accidental” at this time.
