Damaged lock fixed

Damaged lock fixed

WHITCHURCH Lock was re-opened at 6pm on Tuesday following repairs.

The Environment Agency closed the lock on Saturday saying emergency repairs were needed due to damage to one of the gates.

The African Queen and Caversham Princess pleasure boats had to turn around below the toll bridge and return downstream.

In an earlier statement, in the agency said: “The agency has temporarily suspended travel of boats wishing to travel through the lock.

“Movement along the river is still possible above and below the closure and the agency recognises this has unfortunately impacted boaters wanting to pass through the area.

“The agency has been working hard to complete the complex repairs that are needed so that the public will be able to safely use the lock.

“We would like to reassure all users that we are carrying out these works as quickly and safely as possible so that the lock can
re-open soon.”
