Hundreds attend pub’s country music night

MORE than 250 people attended a country music night held at a pub in Watlington.

The live music event was held at the Chequers in Love Lane and featured line dancing.

There was a performance from The Honky Tonk Angels who sang songs by Lynyrd Skynyrd, Johnny Cash and more.

The event was organised by Gosia Jarzebak-De who runs the pub with her husband.

Ms Jarzebak-De said she started thinking about throwing the event after watching the American neo-Western drama Yellowstone which features Kevin Costner.

She said: “I watched it last year and somehow it got me very much into the whole country vibe and then the idea somehow got into me.”

She said the event was well-received. She said: “It's a bit unusual to have country music in this area. I have had the idea for quite some time and it went very well.

“I think the best part was that people really got into it and were involved. They got dressed up and they had special shoes and clothes.

“There were people not just from Watlington but from the surrounding area, and that was nice. I think people really liked; they are asking me when the next one is.”

Ms Jarzebak-De described country music as “foot tapping.”

She said: “Any live music is great, but personally I believe that any live music that people can dance to is even better.”

Ms Jarzebak-De said by the end of the night, people were singing along to Take Me Home, Country Roads by John Denver and even standing on tables.

She Jarzebak-De said that her favourite country artist was Dolly Parton, of which whose bad covered a number of her hits.

“The way she Take Me Home, Country Roads sings about life, people can resonate and relate to,” she said: “She sings about the things we face on a daily basis.”
