Don’t destroy countryside

Sir, — Here’s why we should oppose the proposed development of the sites at Highlands Farm, Lucy’s Farm and Gillotts School:

If planners of the future residential expansion of Henley are serious in their stated aims (to minimise environmental impact, including tackling the traffic and pollution problems in the town centre) and if they really want to encourage walking and cycling as a means of transport and expand our range of sporting facilities as part of the much mentioned “Olympic legacy”, then the above three sites are, arguably, outstanding in their unsuitability for handing over to the developers.

The site at Highlands Farm, although a brownfield site, is situated in an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty adjacent to land of special archaeological interest.
