Smiling in the face of floods misery

Authorities put to shame

Sir, — On behalf of everyone living in the vicinity of Shiplake station, I would like to issue a heartfelt thank-you to a local resident who, unprompted, gave his time and resources to save several houses from flooding last week.

The threat of flooding came not come from the river but from a rapidly expanding lake of sewage in Station Road — an ongoing problem reported to the council and Thames Water many, many times over the last 15 years but never fully resolved.

Without either the use of a four-wheel drive or the less attractive option of wading thigh deep in the sewage water (which many residents, including children, had no choice but to do), access to Bolney Drive and the station was rendered virtually impossible, effectively cutting Lower Shiplake in two.

Neither South Oxfordshire District Council, Oxfordshire County Council nor Thames Water were keen to accept responsibility or to find a solution.
