A TEENAGER from Lambridge Wood Road won his first race at Silverstone last weekend.
Fourteen-year-old Leo Robinson progressed from racing karts to cars this year, and is competing in the Ginetta junior class for 14 to 17 years old drivers.
Qualifying was held in wet conditions and Robinson finished in the midfield. The first race that afternoon was a further damp squib with Robinson being caught up in a collision. The race was stopped shortly afterwards due to heavy rain and poor visibility.
The following day was Robinson’s crowning glory. Robinson moved up from 12th on the grid to fourth place by the end of the race. In the final race Robinson took the lead on the opening lap. A close battle ensued with many changes of order as the top six cars contested the podium places. Towards the end of the race, two cars had drawn away from the chasing pack with Robinson pursuing the leader. Robinson drew alongside in the final laps. Robinson was not aware that the leader had picked up a five second time penalty due to running outside the rack limits on a number of occasions.
At the chequered flag, Robinson was less than three tenths of a second behind, which meant he took the race win.
