Exhibition commemorates Home Front Henley

AN EXHIBITION marking the centenary of the outbreak of the First World War opens at the River and Rowing Museum tomorrow, Saturday.

“Home Front Henley” features pictures, letters and memorabilia from the town between 1914 and 1918, as well as stories from local families affected by the conflict.

Among the exhibits will be letters written by Henley soldiers on the front line to their families in the town. The exhibition will also look at the town’s large contingent of rowers, many of whom left to join the war effort and didn’t return.

Several of Henley’s soldiers will have their stories looked at in depth, while there will be a record of all those from the town who fought and died in the conflict.

There will be a display on Henley’s women, who were forced to take up traditionally male jobs while the men were away fighting and contribute to the war effort from home.
