CLASSICAL music fans have a difficult choice to make this weekend, with two concerts taking place at the same time tomorrow night (Saturday).
First up at 7pm is South Chiltern Choral Society’s summer concert on the theme of Music and Poetry.
The venue for the event is Queen Anne’s School in Henley Road, Caversham, with the audience being invited to enjoy a picnic in the grounds from 5pm.
Highlights of the programme include Songs and Sonnets from Shakespeare — a collection of well-known texts set to music by the jazz pianist George Shearing included to mark 400 years since the Bard’s death
Tickets for adults are £12, with under-21s admitted half-price, and are available in advance by calling 07500 032840 or visiting the website www.southchilternchoralsociety.org.uk
Nearby St Laurence’s Church in Friar Street, Reading, is the venue for a Scandinavian-themed concert by the Reading Bach Choir starting at 7.30pm.
Pining for the Fjords is a concert of choral music from Scandinavia — ranging from the luscious romanticism of Sandstrom’s settings of love songs from the Song of Solomon to the epic lament by Mantijaarvi for lost souls drowned when cruise ferry the Estonia sank in 1994. The sonorous church music of Finnish composer Rautavaara contrasts with Scandinavian folk music, celebrating the long summer evenings of the northern lands.
Tickets are £12 for adults, with concessions available. Call 0118 947 8097 or email firstname.lastname@example.org
