SEVENTY-FIVE years ago the Battle of Britain was being fought in the skies above our towns and cities.

Culminating in a crucial victory for the Allies, the conflict lasted three months and three weeks — from July 10 to October 31, 1940.

To mark the occasion, and honour those who took part — including those who gave their lives — BBC Radio 2 has lined up a day of live broadcasts from Biggin Hill on Friday, September 18.

This includes a Friday Night is Music Night special to be broadcast live on the BBC Red Button and in 300 cinemas across the UK, including Henley’s Regal Picturehouse.

Starting at 7.30pm and running for two and a half hours, the live broadcast will mark the culmination of BBC Radio 2’s

The Battle of Britain at 75
— a series of programmes beginning that morning with the Chris Evans Breakfast Show.

The Jeremy Vine Show will also go out live from Biggin Hill, with the presenter set to host a discussion of the modern-day RAF and the role it plays.

He will also be joined by current RAF personnel to discuss how today’s RAF is “securing the skies”.

Later in the day, a 30-minute segment exclusive to the cinema broadcast will include a close-up tour of a Spitfire and veteran fighter pilots recounting their memories of the Battle Of Britain.

Adult tickets are priced £20, with membership and other concessions available. For more details or to book, visit www.picturehouses.com or call 08719 025738.
