Quartet for the End of Time at Hambleden Church on Saturday, July 25, at 7.30pm.
This major chamber work was written in the Nazi prison camp Stalag VIII—A in 1941. A sympathetic guard supplied Messiaen with a pencil and manuscript paper to write a piece for the only instrumentalists in the camp — a clarinettist, violinist, cellist and pianist.
The result was the
Quartet, which has been described as “touching the far edges of human experience”.
The Soloists will also play Brahms’s
Clarinet Trio in A minor and Schubert’s
Violin Sonata in D major.
Tickets are £12.50 from Hambleden Stores or on the door. Free entry for under—18s.
