Music for time’s end

THE Serenata Soloists will perform Messiaen’s

Quartet for the End of Time
at Hambleden Church on Saturday, July 25, at 7.30pm.

This major chamber work was written in the Nazi prison camp Stalag VIII—A in 1941. A sympathetic guard supplied Messiaen with a pencil and manuscript paper to write a piece for the only instrumentalists in the camp — a clarinettist, violinist, cellist and pianist.

The result was the

Quartet
, which has been described as “touching the far edges of human experience”.

The Soloists will also play Brahms’s

Clarinet Trio in A minor
and Schubert’s

Violin Sonata in D major
.

Tickets are £12.50 from Hambleden Stores or on the door. Free entry for under—18s.
