Old pals’ act is sure to go with a swing

TWO old friends are bringing their shared love of the Great American Songbook to the Kenton Theatre next

TWO old friends are bringing their shared love of the Great American Songbook to the Kenton Theatre next week.

Jazz singer Claire Martin and acclaimed saxophonist and vocalist Ray Gelato are embarking on the 2016 leg of a UK tour to promote their forthcoming album We’ve Got A World That Swings.

They bring their show A Swinging Affair to the New Street venue next Friday (February 26), where they will explore the Great American Songbook through a series of specially arranged duets.

Numbers likely to feature include That Old Black Magic, Come Dance With Me, Let’s Call the Whole Thing Off, They Can’t Take That Away from Me and Can’t We Be Friends.

Speaking of which, Claire and Ray have known each other for 30 years but this is their first live show together — though it has now been touring the UK since October 2014.

Claire, who was awarded the OBE for services to jazz in 2011, says of the show: “Ray and I go back many years — he gave me my first musical break in my late teens. We are both passionate about this music and share the same love of great songs, which we will be singing and swinging with the world-class pianist Dave Newton. We also love to put on a show, so get ready to be entertained!”

Ray added: “It’s a pleasure to share the stage with one of my favourite singers and dear friend Claire Martin. Our aim is to present jazz music for everybody and to bring back a revitalised new concept of the vocal duet. To Claire and I, music is about communication and telling a story. We hope to communicate our love of swingin’ music to you all.”

The show starts at 8pm and runs for 120 minutes, including an interval. Tickets are £22, including a £1 restoration levy. To book, call (01491) 575698 or visit www.kentontheatre.co.uk
