A 50ft ash tree in Rivermead, Benson, is to be cut down.

Parish councillors have decided that felling the tree, which stands between the paddling pool and the bistro, is the safest option following advice from a tree surgeon.

An extraordinary general meeting of the council’s recreation and lands group was held last month after a branch from the tree fell into the bistro car park.

Councillors initially hoped to remove 25 per cent of the tree in order to make it safer but the expert said felling it would be the only way to ensure the area was safe.

Councillor Dave Rushton, chairman of the group, said: “I will be sad to see it go but we cannot possibly ignore the safety implications of leaving it in place.”

Councillors agreed to spend up to £1,000 on the work.

lBenson councillors have agreed to spend up to £1,200 on installing network cables at the parish hall in order to extend WiFi from the parish office to the kitchen and pavilion, so hirers can have internet access.
