Station in offer for floral train

HENLEY’S floral train could be rehomed in the station car park.

HENLEY’S floral train could be rehomed in the station car park.

Train company GWR has expressed an interest in sponsoring the restoration of the train, which used to stand in Station Park.

It is currently in storage and its plywood wheels need replacing.

Henley in Bloom committee member Caroline Langler approached GWR chief  executive Mark Hopwood at the Henley Branch User Group’s annual meeting last month asking about possible sponsorship.

He said the company would be happy for the train to be sited at the station but it would require quotes for the restoration work.

Mrs Langler had one quote for £1,850 to replace the wooden wheels with metal ones and £250 to cover the front of the train. Previously the front was filled with plants but this would be replaced with a metal cover and the only part of the train that would be planted would be the rear.

Now Mrs Langler is to obtain further quotes before going back to GWR.

Former mayor Elizabeth Hodgkin said she would have preferred to keep the train in Station Park, where it was last displayed in 2014.

But she added: “It’s nice they’re keeping it and not giving it away. Hopefully, GWR will come up with the sponsorship money.”
