Southwell helps side remain top of table

NETTLEBED STINGERS ran out winners by six goals in their Reading and District League match against previous top-of-the-table side Firebirds on Tuesday of last week.

The match started at a fast tempo as the ball was passed quickly and freely in the centre court between Emma Johnston (C) and Mandy Hough (WA) and worked in to Katie Bayfield (GA) who started scoring regularly as the Stingers ended the first quarter 5-0 up.

The Firebirds fought back in the second quarter as the teams went in level at 12-12 at half-time.

The defensive network of Sarah Roberts (WD), Chanti Stubbs (GK) and Emma Garret (GD) made some good interceptions and picked up the rebounds to turn play for the Stingers who ended the third quarter one goal up.

The final quarter saw a change in players as Totie Southwell, who was returning from injury, came on as GS. The Stingers gave it one final push as they ended the match 25-19 winners to remain top of the table.

LAST Saturday saw Nettlebed Stingers run out comfortable winners against Reading Juniors in the Reading and District League.

Both teams passed well but the height in the Stingers side meant that many passes were intercepted and this alongside accurate passing led to a first quarter score of 24-3 to Nettlebed.

The second quarter saw a change in the Reading team with some height being put into their defensive circle. This helped to create a more even paced quarter but Nettlebed were strong defensively in all areas of the court, and were able to pull ahead further through the accuracy of Chanti Stubbs (GS) and Katie Bayfield (GA) in the shooting circle. At half-time Nettlebed led 40-4.

The Stingers made a change to their shooting team at half time. The strength of the Stingers meant that almost all of the passes in and around the Juniors’ circle were intercepted and passed back up the court and Nettlebed capitalised on this and the quarter ended at 56-6.

The Juniors finished stronger in the fourth quarter scoring four goals while the Stingers rattled in a further 13. Sammy Coff (WA) was awarded player of the match for the Stingers.
