Stubbs shines as Stingers ease to comfortable victory

NETTLEBED STINGERS suffered defeat last week after being advised of guaranteed promotion to Division 1 of the Maidenhead and District League.

The game started evenly with Stingers finishing 6-4 ahead at the end of the first quarter. Flyers pulled ahead with well executed shooting to finish at half-time with a three goal lead.

At half time Stingers made a few changes to their attacking line up but this was not enough to bridge the gap and Flyers pulled ahead further to 23-14. The score at this point did not necessarily reflect the evenness of the game but with every opportunity Flyers had, they executed almost every chance and pulled ahead to leave them with a good lead with only 12 minutes left to play. Stingers made a few further changes and fought back to win the last quarter 9-4.

NETTLEBED STINGERS ran out comfortable winners in their Reading and District League clash with Zodiac.

The game was evenly matched for the first quarter, play was fast and each team scoring from their centre pass. However, the Zodiac goalkeeper suffered an injury midway through the quarter and had to come off leaving them with six players on court. Stingers took advantage of this to bring the score to 11-7 after the first quarter.

A substitute was made for the second quarter and numbers were again even. Stingers’ formidable defensive duo of Chanti Stubbs (GK) and Lydia Johnson (GD) made it tough work for Zodiac to get the ball to their shooters.

Many passes in to them were intercepted and turned over back to Stingers attack with quick support from Emma Payne (WD). At the half time whistle Stingers were leading 24-9. Good attacking play from Clare McCarthy (WA) and Mandy Hough (C) ensured the ball was getting into the shooters Katie Bayfield (GA) and Claire Priddy (GS) enabling them to increase Stingers lead.

Zodiac’s defence turned up the heat and made Stingers work harder to gain possession but Nettlebed’s height advantage gave them the edge and enabled them to move 33-14 ahead.

Zodiac pushed right until the final whistle but Stingers gained the win in a game that saw Chanti Stubbs named player of the match.
