Prospective councillor - Martin Akehurst

SINCE first being elected four years ago, I have been deputy mayor and I am the current Mayor.

SINCE first being elected four years ago, I have been deputy mayor and I am the current Mayor.

I have lived in Henley for 36 years with my wife, a retired deputy head of Valley Road Primary School, and have two grown–up daughters. I am a retired IT manager and spent 29 years working in the UK and US after which I ran two local IT–based businesses. I am therefore very supportive of all areas of business in Henley.

I have been chairman of the Valley Road School PTA, Henley Investments Group and Chandler Akehurst.  I fund–raise for the Samaritans and the MS Society. Until recently, I was on the management board of a preserved building in Henley (Thames Lodge). After my industrial career, I became a professional actor appearing in, among others, Love Actually, The Catherine Tate Show and EastEnders.

I have been vice–chairman of the planning and the finance and strategy committees and a member of the neighbourhood planning group, town hall IT working group and council legal group. I am a trustee of the River and Rowing Museum, the Henley Municipal Charities and the Over–60s Club.

As two members of my family relied on wheelchairs, I am also keen on disabled access issues in the town.
