Prospective councillor - Jane Smewing

I HAVE been a member of HRG since the beginning because I agree with its core

I HAVE been a member of HRG since the beginning because I agree with its core beliefs. To keep Henley such a good place to live, we can’t just sit still, we need actively to safeguard what we’ve got and support good new ideas.

At town council level, national political parties are not relevant but a group of councillors can be much more effective than individual  independents.

And there is a lot to do: we must get the skate park built and tackle air pollution, which is getting worse by the day. We also need to make sure that the promises of affordable homes in the neighbourhood plan are kept – and since we must have more houses, let’s have homes worth having with decent design standards and the infrastructure to support them.

The experience I can bring to the council comes from my home and my working life. I’ve worked in IT at home and in Bracknell and Oxford. I’ve also worked in local government, so understand the powers and responsibilities of various councils and how they fit together.

I’ve been a member and then chair of the Gillotts Parents’ Association and of the Henley Outdoor Play Scheme. I now work part–time and expect to retire this year, so I have both the time and background to become an effective councillor.
