Prospective councillor - Lorraine Hillier

I HAVE have lived in Henley for 25 years and feel privileged to live and work here.

I HAVE have lived in Henley for 25 years and feel privileged to live and work here.

I was first elected to the town council in 1999. I appreciated it was a wonderful opportunity to voice the concerns and the wishes of the electorate. I have chaired the town and community committee and been a member of the planning, finance and best value committees.

I have also represented various outside bodies, including the Henley Midnight Matinéee (raising money for local causes), the Henley Society (protecting our heritage and shaping of our town’s future) and the Friends of Townlands Hospital.

In 2003 I was deputy mayor and in 2007 became a district councillor.

In 2007, after 36 years, I left my career in graphic design to open Hot Gossip Coffee House in Friday Street. This has made me appreciate the value of independent businesses in the town and the difficulties currently faced by traders. More recently, I opened the traditional Upstairs and Downstairs tea shop in Duke Street. I always employ local people and in particular give job opportunities to young people as I find it rewarding.

I have seen many of our aspirations for the town realised but there is still much to do for Henley to continue to be a thriving market town.
