Reading East MP Rob Wilson was given a tour of four new classrooms at the Heights Primary School in Gosbrook Road, Caversham, left. The school, which opened at its temporary premises in September 2014 under headteacher Karen Edwards, needed to extend to accommodate an extra year group. This has also allowed a large space to be freed up for PE and assemblies. The extension was paid for by the Education Funding Agency, which is due to confirm that Mapledurham playing fields will be become the school’s permanant site from September 2017 at the earliest. Mr Wilson said: “The expansion offers pupils and teachers greater choice and flexibility in terms of how space is utilised rather than having to continually worry about how pupils would be accommodated. I’m delighted to see pupils enjoying their learning in what continues to be a caring, nurturing and very positive school.&rdquo Meanwhile, Mr Wilson also visited Micklands Primary School in Caversham to congratulate the staff and pupils on achieving an Ofsted rating of “good” following its latest inspection. The school was rated “good” in four out of the five key areas and “outstanding” in the other area, the personal development, behaviour and welfare of pupils. The inspectors praised the “exceptional leadership” of headteacher Sharon Jones and the ambition and tenacity of the leadership team and governors. Mr Wilson, who was given a tour of the school and talked to pupils about his job, said: “It’s always encouraging to visit schools in which there exists a clear enthusiasm for learning, a focus on achievement and success, a determination to pursue progress at all levels and, above all, a welcoming environment in which pupils can grow both personally and academically. Micklands Primary struck me as just this type of school and the leadership team, teachers and pupils should all feel very proud.”
