Converted golf clubhouse has ‘links’ to 007 creator

CHILTERN House, an elegant four-bedroom home in the former clubhouse of Huntercombe Golf Club, where James Bond author Ian Fleming was once a member, is on the market at £900,000.

According to a spokesman for Huntercombe Golf Club: “Ian Fleming, the James Bond author, was a member for 32 years until his death in 1964.

“At the start of their famous golf match, James Bond tells Goldfinger that he played off nine at Huntercombe — a handicap that he shared with his creator.”

This beautiful Edwardian building, The Old Clubhouse, was built in 1910 and served as the golf club’s headquarters until it was replaced and converted into six luxury homes in 1967.

It is said that Ian Fleming used to sit and write his novels in the library of the clubhouse at that time — the first-floor room that is now the sitting room of Chiltern House.

Did some of James Bond’s adventures come to life in this house? Probably. Maybe.

What is certain is that this historic house is in a picturesque location in Nuffield, between Henley and Wallingford, with the golf club on one side and National Trust woodland and parkland on the other.

Chiltern House is arranged over three floors and has almost as much character as some of the James Bond film locations.

It has a stunning arched glazed entrance way, enormous bay windows, original oak floors, tall ceilings and grand feature fireplaces.

On the ground floor is a large, truly gorgeous drawing room. It has a dining room off to the side, separated by folding double doors, so it can either be used as a quiet private space or opened up to make one big living area.

The L-shaped kitchen-breakfast room is decorated in neutral colours, there are Shaker-style cupboards with plenty of space for storage, a dishwasher and a washing machine.

The kitchen-breakfast room leads to a cloakroom and the back door.

On the first floor there is a large sitting room with a window seat and a balcony — possibly the very spot where, in Ian Fleming’s notebook anyway, James Bond first ordered a Martini shaken not stirred. Perhaps.

This room has a fantastically wide window-seat where you can sit in the sunshine and read a good book — or even write one, if you are so inclined.

There is a study area and a bedroom on this floor, and a bathroom at the back.

Upstairs on the second floor there are skylights, three more bedrooms and a shower room.

Outside there is a detached garage at the back of the house, a sheltered courtyard area and beautiful landscaped gardens for residents to enjoy.

Chiltern House, one of the six residences at The Old Clubhouse at Huntercombe Golf Club, is set back from the road in a quiet location and approached down a private driveway.

This property is on the market with Stowhill Estates on 01235 751888 and has a guide price of £900,000.
