Museum chief moves to Leander

THE director of the River & Rowing Museum in Henley has been appointed as the new general manager of Leander Club.

Steve O’Connor, 43, who lives in Ancastle Green, will replace Alastair Heathcote in May.

He will lead the overall operation and management of the club and its athletes, who have won 159 Olympic and Paralympic medals since 1908.

Mr O’Connor joined the museum in July 2023 to help put it on a national footing and to break even by 2027.

Previously he founded Fulham Reach Boat Club in London and he has a background in marketing and sales, working for major international companies.

Mr O’Connor said: “It has been a privilege to lead the museum through this pivotal phase and a real joy to have worked with such a dedicated team of staff, trustees and supporters. We have achieved so much together and started to make real progress. The chance to join Leander as general manager is a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity. It is one I feel compelled to take but, as a local resident and friend of the museum, I remain committed to helping the charity in whatever way I can, particularly during my final few months.” David Worthington, chairman of trustees, said: “Steve’s contribution has made a huge difference and we are very sad to see him leave but wish him well in his role. His tenure has seen so many positive changes in a very short space of time.”

Pete Bridge, chairman of Leander Club, said: “We are absolutely delighted that Steve has agreed to join us.

“His experience will be invaluable in helping the club build on all the great work that has been done over the past few years.

“Living in Henley Steve will bring his unique insight to ensuring a truly excellent experience at the club for all our athletes and members.”

Mr Heathcote, a former soldier who served in Bosnia and Iraq, has extensive experience in rowing and hospitality. He joined Leander Club in 2020.
