Abbey lose unbeaten home run

A TRY from fullback Gavin Dampies was not enough as Newbury halted Abbey’s two-year unbeaten

A TRY from fullback Gavin Dampies was not enough as Newbury halted Abbey’s two-year unbeaten home record.

The hosts were soon shown that in Division 1 East, pace and thought need to be quicker. Abbey competed well in set-pieces and possession but it brought scant reward.

Dampies’ try, having begun his run from his own territory was Abbey’s first half and only score and they went in at the break 5-10.

Abbey continued to press after the restart but Newbury played with quick hands and nimble feet, clocking up another three tries, two of them being converted. Their last in the dying seconds flattered the visitors.
