Abbey denied bonus point after putting in gallant display

AN Abbey side shorn of several first team regulars put up a spirited show in their Southern Counties North clash with table-topping Bletchley at Manor Fields.

The visitors started and finished strongly; they led 9-0 after 15 minutes and were unfortunate not to claim both four try and losing bonus points in a late rally.

Bletchley crossed the Abbey line on eight occasions, but with goalkicker Phil Harman sidelined with injury, there were no successful conversions.

The saga of Abbey’s ever-changing halfback combinations took on an intriguing twist, coach Russell Bolton appearing as scrum half with Jim Dye outside him.

Fullback Jack Brown put in the first of many ambitious runs in the opening minutes before Dye sent over a 45 metre penalty. He then put Abbey in a strong position with a touch kick from a penalty, and when Knights won the ensuing line-out Abbey mauled well. Bletchley relieved the pressure, but a further touch find from Dye put his side back on the attack. Knights pinched the ball from the home pack, and when Bletchley were penalised again, Dye stroked over another long-range kick to give his side a 6-0 lead.
