HENLEY BULLS missed out on a place in the Oxfordshire Cup final after going down 24-19 to Midlands 2 West side Banbury.
After turning round 19-18 at half-time the hosts showed the tenacity of playing weekly league rugby to win this semi-final by scoring two penalties in the second half to which the Bulls could not reply.
Henley were slow to start. After conceding a penalty 35 metres out in front of the posts, which Banbury’s fly half Alex Fogavini could not convert after his attempt hit an upright, they were then caught unawares when a punt over their line was covered too slowly and centre Jimmy Manley won a tight race to touch down. Fogavini was on target with the conversion.
Leading 7-0 Banbury continued to keep the Bulls deep in their half and a backs movement led to an unconverted try by wing Josh Deakin who ran through an ineffective tackle to take the score to 12-0 after 20 minutes.
The Bulls got on the score sheet when they drove from a 10 metre line-out and number eight Ben Ashmore touched down to make the score 12-5.
