THE Oratory School senior sevens squad were victorious at the Berkshire U18 festival held at Pangbourne College.
Back-to-back wins, including a comprehensive victory over Windsor Boys’ School, saw the team, led by England Counties representative Max Clementson, progress to the final.
Supported by Oli Lovett, who has played alongside Max Clementson in the South West England regional schools’ team, and other Old Boys from the Oratory Prep School, namely Rory Baxter, Iwan Macrae, Alex Walmsley, Harry Derbyshire, Lucas Huysinga and James Appleyard, the squad played some attractive rugby with some slick handling and good support play.
Every member of the squad got a run-out in each game and with two tries in each half, The Oratory beat a combative Reading School side 26-0 to claim the Berkshire U18 Schools’ title for 2016.
On Sunday the squad travelled north to Oakham School for their prestigious sevens competition.
In a tough group The Oratory got off to a flyer and were victorious in their first three group games as they defeated Leicester Grammar school, Worksop School and Denstone College in some high action games.
Defeat in the final group game against eventual competition winners Bedford School saw the Oratory finish second in Group 2.
They progressed to the plate with other group runners-up but went out of the competition following defeat to Rugby School.
* Oratory rugby players have achieved representative honours this season in various age groups: Max Clementson (U18s England Counties); Oli Lovett (U18s SW England regional schools’ team); George Probyn (U18s Wasps Academy); William Bruce Vanderpuye (training with U16s Scottish Exiles); Morgan Macrae (U14s Wasps Academy and Berkshire); Cornell Kinniburgh (U14 Berkshire County Team).
