Abbey miss out on bonus points as they slip closer to relegation zone
HOSTS Abbey will be pleased to have held second placed Thatcham to 17 points, conceded right at the start of the two halves, writes Mike Mellor.
Losing bonus points were almost within grasp from a late sustained forwards attack, but a fussy referee took the momentum away with a yellow card for each side which saw one of Abbey’s best forwards, Fungai, sidelined for the last minute.
Despite being denied the try and the conversion Abbey can still be positive about their performance.
Changes to the Abbey line-up were the returns of Tom Wright at outside half, and Jules Greenaway on the wing. Paul Emmery was a late unavailability so Ollie Charlton started and Liam Rolland took the bench.
Abbey’s downfall was their start to each half. Although they took possession from their own kick-off, they were too easily dispossessed and Thatcham counterattacked down the left only to be denied by a fine covering tackle from Arron Ross. Within seconds Thatcham had set up a strong maul to then push the ball out to lock Tom Bestwick standing out on the left who got the try.
