Wheeler’s late try enough to secure cup for Hawks

HENLEY HAWKS WOMEN became the first side to have their name etched on the inaugural national Intermediate Cup after defeating Eccles in the final at Lichfield on Saturday.

The victory completes a remarkable season for Henley who have won every competitive match which also saw them win the Championship South West Division 2 title.

Both sides started brightly and wanted to run the ball and it was apparent early on that Eccles had some dangerous runners, none more so than their fullback.

The defences on either side were holding firm but with a strong wind in their faces, Henley started to build some pressure via good phase play.

They worked their way into the 22 with a run from Parry down the left. A penalty within simple distance was then awarded soon after and duly converted by Lynch.
