Rugby team round off inaugural season in style

ABBEY NUNS rounded off their inaugural season in style with a second placed finish at the Middlesex Griffin Cup, a record representation of 14 players for Berkshire Ladies’ 47-17 win over Oxfordshire, and entry to their first ever league for the forthcoming 2014/15 season.

On Saturday the Nuns travelled to Finchley RFC for the 15-a-side knockout Griffin Cup tournament and after wins over Kilburn and Windsor, lost narrowly to Hammersmith and Fulham Ladies, an established league side in the cup final, finishing second place overall from eight teams. Abbey Nuns will now compete in South West 2 league next season.

The following day, 13 Abbey players were selected to represent Berkshire Ladies against Oxfordshire in the second county fixture of the season.

Claire Stevens, Kate Whitehead, Joey Fowler, Meg Fowler, Jess Potter, Annabel Hawkins, Rosie Dennis, Sammy Cooper, Hollie King, Kat Issac, Abi Wall, Jo Richards, Mel Ruffell and coach Annette Tomas were among those selected and all helped to seal victory.

• Abbey Nuns are seeking new players for next season. There is an open training session on June 18 at 7.30pm at Reading Abbey RFC. For further details email Annette Tomas at annettetomas@live.com
