Vikings slay Bulls

HENLEY BULLS narrowly lost out at the Richmond Athletic Ground on Saturday in a thrilling encounter.

Richmond looked threatening from the start with former Hawks scrum-half Callum Grant raising the tempo of the game which asked questions of the Bulls defence. This remained unbreached long enough for Mark Bruce to launch a counterattack and Tom Garner put winger Matt Dickens through for the opening try. Fullback Rory Lillington converted.

Five minutes later the Richmond pack moved into the Bulls’ territory and an ambitious miss-pass to the home three-quarters was cleverly intercepted by fly-half Ben Wiltshire whose own pace took him under the posts for Henley’s second score. Lillington again converted.

The Richmond lock broke several tackles to score a try in the wide channel. The conversion was missed.

Soon after a series of seven tight drives from the Richmond pack saw them cross for a second try despite a defiant effort from the Bulls defence to keep them out. This time the conversion was landed and the Bulls took a 14-12 lead into the break.
