SHIPLAKE COLLEGE’S Tom Howe played a key part in an eight-try thriller at St George’s Park, Burton, last weekend to help England U18s beat Leicester U19 Academy 28-27.
A spell of early pressure from Tigers’ hooker Thacker gave Leicester the first score but England fought back with a converted try to lead 7-5. It was not until the second half that Leicester gained reward for their territorial dominance easing out to a 19-7 lead.
Howe came on as a substitute and had an immediate impact as he ran 50 metres before touching down under the posts to score England’s third try and give his side a narrow 22-21 lead. A fourth try soon followed to give England a six-point cushion.
In a close finish Tigers scored in the last minute of the game but were unable to convert.
This was the first time in five years that England U18s have beaten Leicester Academy.
