Stern test for Hawks

HENLEY Hawks’ pre-season reaches its peak tomorrow when they take on London Welsh at Dry Leas.

HENLEY Hawks’ pre-season reaches its peak tomorrow when they take on London Welsh at Dry Leas.

Kick-off is at 3pm and admission will be £5 with season tickets not valid until Sunday.

Both teams are playing in new leagues this season, with the Hawks gaining promotion to National League Division 1 and London Welsh stepping down from the Premier League relegated to the Championship.

This game will test the Hawks’ preparation for what is shaping up as a challenging season ahead, as the Welsh have declared that they will be striving to regain Premier status next year and they have retained most of last season’s squad.

For their part the Hawks have retained all but two of their players, James Winterbottom and Richard Briggs having retired.

However, the Hawks have an injury list to contend with. Christoph Bart (wing), Ryan Newman (flanker) and Will Jones (wing/full-back) have injuries which may keep them out for a few weeks, whilst Jack Shaylor still has a longer term problem.

Robbie Stapley (No 8) and Danny Well (centre) are coming back after injury.

This match will give an opportunity for new signings to show their mettle and there is another chance for them to do this tonight when the Bulls play Ealing Trailfinders 2nd XV at Ealing, kick-off 7.45pm (entrance £5).

The two teams will be playing in Division 1 of the Zoo League during the season

The Bulls are fielding a strong side with new signings Mark Bruce (scrum-half) and Elliott Markham at half-back and England Under 18 cap Connor Stapley at No 8.
