SHIPLAKE COLLEGE narrowly missed out on winning the South Coast Kings tournament in Southampton last weekend.

SHIPLAKE COLLEGE narrowly missed out on winning the South Coast Kings tournament in Southampton last weekend.

Arriving in Southampton, bathed with glorious autumn sunshine, the Shiplake College 1st XV squad looked forward to the intensive South Coast Kings Tournament.

With a succession of six 15-minute matches to be completed in under three-and-a-half hours, the squad knew that the seven-team tournament would be a tough test of their fitness.

A 7-7 draw, versus Ysgol Gyfun Gymraeg Glantaf in the opening game suggested that it would be a Sunday of uncompromising rugby and good skill levels.

Shiplake found their feet with a convincing 21-0 victory over King Edward VI School and maintained their momentum with an impressive 10-7 win against Byranston. As the weather worsened, the rain becoming torrential, Shiplake slipped to a 10-0 defeat at the hands of Whitchurch. With the matches coming quick and fast Shiplake gained valuable points from their 19-0 win over Windsor Boys’ School.

The last game, versus Hartpury, had become a final. Harptury won 7-0 to secure the title while Shiplake took third place overall and won the bowl.
