HENLEY BULLS suffered a second consecutive away defeat at the hands of Esher Cardinals in their opening Division 1 game
HENLEY BULLS suffered a second consecutive away defeat at the hands of Esher Cardinals in their opening Division 1 game of The Zoo Shield and came away without a point having had much of the first half possession and territory.
Although seeming to dominate the scrummage for much of the game the Bulls failed to use possession effectively and assisted the Cardinals to an early 9-0 lead through errors and indiscipline around the ruck.
The Cardinals scored the first of their four tries close to half-time as an inaccurate restart from the Bulls was gathered and a split defence was capitalised upon by the Cardinals, weaving their way through the Bulls with effective off-loading to score between the posts.
The Bulls could not secure lineout possession and with Esher’s back row in good form the Bulls struggled to make headway throughout the second half in the fashion they did throughout the first 30 minutes when they looked threatening.
James Lambert made a debut as scrum-half having converted recently from the wing and fellow teenager Jordan Ethelston also looks a promising talent for Henley but the stand-out performance was from Matt Reeves in the back row whose dogged determination was the highlight of an under par performance by Bulls standards. Esher added three further scores in the second half of which only one was converted.
