Henley have no answer as Shiplake take derby honours

SHIPLAKE College ended the first half of their season with victory over local rivals Henley College last week.

SHIPLAKE College ended the first half of their season with victory over local rivals Henley College last week.

For the first 10 minutes Shiplake pressed and enjoyed dominance in terms of territory and possession but had to remain patient.

In wet conditions Shiplake assessed that field position would be the key to success and so it proved. Good game management skills from Deane at number eight, scrum-half Rice and fly-half Howe gave Shiplake the edge.

A well-judged kick from Toby Howe led to a ruck close to the Henley line. Harry Wallace reacted quickly to touch down and give Shiplake the lead. Howe went on to convert and provide a seven point cushion. Still in the first half it was another chip, this time from Dom Rice, which put the Henley defence under pressure.

A clearing kick failed to find touch, giving Will Janes the opportunity to sprint down the right-hand touchline and give Shiplake a 12 point lead as half-time approached.

In the second half Henley mounted attack after attack as they looked to make their mark on the scoreboard but the Shiplake defence was well organised and physical. Shiplake rucked aggressively and produced turnovers that dented Henley’s momentum.
