THE Oratory School’s U16s ran out winners at the Stonyhurst Sevens on Wednesday of last week.
The Woodcote–based school won their group in style beating Audenshaw, Birkenhead School and Kirkham Grammar by comfortable margins.
The quarter–final against Lancaster Grammar was a tense affair in which The Oratory trailed early on. However, the running ability of former Oratory Prep School pupils Harry Davies and Iwan Macrae ensured that The Oratory were always threatening with ball–in–hand and ended up 40–12 winners.
The semi–final draw pitted The Oratory against Stonyhurst College. Despite the hosts’ home advantage, The Oratory put in a strong performance to win 40–5 with Tom Croisdale rounding off a well–worked team try.
The final, against Merchant Taylor’s Crosby, was The Oratory’s best performance of the season.
Early tries from Harry Derbyshire and George Probyn put The Oratory in control at half–time. The second half followed a similar pattern with Charlie Williams and Will Barber controlling the game at half–back.
The final play of the game saw Matthew Macdonald run half the length of the pitch to score the final try.
The Oratory Preparatory School had earlier won the U13 competition.
