Beckly named new club captain

ABBEY Rugby Club have appointed Mike Beckly as their new captain for the new season.

ABBEY Rugby Club have appointed Mike Beckly as their new captain for the new season.

The new captain replaces Sam Hallett who stood down after two years at the end of last season’s successful title-winning promotion campaign. Beckly joined Abbey three seasons ago and stepped straight into the first team where he made immediate impressive performances.

The back row, who normally plays at number eight, made his mark in youth rugby where he played county rugby for Devon and was inspired by Nathan Kelly who at that time was part of the Saracens set up. Beckly moved to the Thames Valley having qualified as a structural engineer to work for Simpson Associates based in Henley who now sponsor him.

This weekend sees the start of the run down towards the start of the league season as the seniors go to Grasshoppers in West London for a 15-a-side competition.

Abbey’s first league game is on September 12 with a trip to Buckingham.
